Album Review: Lost Hollow-“Looking for Happy”

The Nashville-based Americana act’s album is packed with a variety of wonderfully moving numbers. It could be considered in the same vein as new folk, yet with an authentic country soul, it serves that presentation with a full plate of Americana grit and deep songwriting. The dual harmonies are something to marvel at and the flawless production only adds texture and clarity to this duo’s already powerful vocal connection. The lyrics and music so accurately convey their stories that it’s difficult not to let one’s mind slip into the scene of each song as they play.

In their title track they say they are “Looking For Happy” and I believe them. The song explores the quest for happiness in life so well that it may rally the listener to join the same journey. Besides, what sounds happier than some beautiful ukulele?

“Oh Heart” is a song that writes a message to one’s heart, asking for forgiveness for allowing it to be mistreated. It is a sweet ballad but the best part is that the song gets more uplifting toward the end which raises hope for getting through heartbreak.

The track “Flyaway” sounds like a determined 90s pop alternative song with a touch of country. The great beat reminds one of the Proclaimers “I’m Gonna Be”, though that’s where the similarity ends and it’s own unique energy begins.

The track “Runaway” shows that Lost Hollow are masters at fitting words into phrases that flow smoothly through the song and “Shine On” is evidence of their skills in matching sounds perfectly to their message. This dazzling pop-tinged country song showers the listener with bright textures in the vocals, percussion (brushes and cymbals) and slide guitar, invoking images of twinkling stars.

When the album has ended, it’s easy to reflect upon it with new thoughts as the delivery leaves a lasting mark. Surely, those looking for Happy who decide to listen to Lost Hollow‘s album of the same name will be thoroughly satisfied and inclined to listen over and over again!
