Album Review: Wendy Moten – “I’ve Got You Covered”

Vince Gill Backup Singer Releases New EP

If you are looking for something out of the “old school” country music era, you’ve come to the right place. Wendy Moten brings a familiar sound back to life on this 4-song EP that reminds you of the days when Merle Haggard and Hank Williams graced the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. With a style that reminds you a lot of Brenda Lee, she is a refreshing step back to a time when country music set itself apart from the other genres.

On two soft country ballads, “Going Away Party” and “Til I Get it Right”, you get a real taste of what country music was before the cross-over to rock and pop sounds began to take place. My earlier reference to Brenda Lee or, even Connie Stevens, is pretty evident.

There is a tasteful blend of the steel guitar in several parts of “Til I Get it Right. “Driving Nails in My Coffin” is a more upbeat, energetic song with some very well-placed backing vocals.

Rounding out the EP is an outstanding cover of Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 hit, “Ode to Billy Joe”. Wendy’s powerful voice and excellent range are on full display in this song.

Overall, if a trip back in time to what country music used to be is what you want, this is a great place to start.

If you are a fan of country music at all, I’m sure you will find Wendy Moten as enjoyable as I did.
